Head of Origination
Contract Type:
Contract

This is a hire for an experienced investment professional to help develop real estate impact investment product(s) seeking to address the shortfall in investment into affordable and other types of housing in the UK.

This is a unique role, ideal for someone seeking to gain experience in impact investing, having already forged a career in the real estate sector. Big Society Capital often acts as a cornerstone investor into new funds which seek to improve society and people’s lives. In real estate, the funds we’ve invested in have raised in excess of £500m alongside other institutional investors into impactful investments, predominantly in housing. We also engage widely with a range of partners spanning the private, public and social sectors – and seek to influence change in policy and financial systems by demonstrating the value of impact-led enterprises and investment approaches. Innovation is central to our work – both business models, but also in the investment solutions that will help seed and scale those models.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

The Real Estate Fellow will take responsibility for leading BSC’s approach to impact product development in real estate, working with colleagues across the organisation. The Fellow will:

  • Engage real estate managers with track record and interest in creating new impact investment products. This would be through:
    • 1:1 engagement with priority partners
    • Convening roundtables/working groups around new product development and impact (ideally in conjunction with partners such as Homes England)
  • Scope and develop a structured “accelerator” offer for new fund managers to promote innovation
  • Undertake the initial design of an aggregator product for current and future property investments, which could attract institutional capital and provide a potential exit path for earlier stage, smaller investments
  • Develop tools and systems that enable BSC to more effectively engage priority partners, involving senior leadership and investment colleagues as required for success and leveraging knowledge and relationships effectively across the organisation
  • Work closely with BSC’s investment team colleagues and stakeholders in order to develop new investment products that meet the needs of these partners, as well as those of BSC.
  • You will help build a network of codevelopment partners for BSC’s work, starting in one of our main strategic focus areas
This includes both investment organisations and asset owners who are willing to be first movers at scale in new investment products with a social purpose; as well as housing providers, charities and social entrepreneurs.

The role will sit within the Investment Team but will require significant interaction across a broad range of internal and external stakeholders including: government, investors

(predominantly institutional) and the third sector.
We are a lean and nimble organisation, and the appointed Fellow is encouraged to build a role for themselves and shape our team and approach.
