The Big Society Trust today announced the appointment of Stephen Howard, Chief Executive of Business in the Community, as Director to represent the Business Sector.
Baroness Jill Pitkeathley, Chair of the Big Society Trust, said:
“We are delighted that Stephen is joining us as Director of the Big Society Trust. His wealth of business expertise and work with Business in the Community will add real value. Stephen’s understanding of some of the most challenging social issues facing the UK, such as homelessness and poverty, means he brings a great blend of both business and social sector experience.”
Stephen Howard said:
“Business is the lifeblood of successful prosperous communities and social enterprises are powerful examples of how making profit and making a positive difference can go hand in hand. I believe that business can be a powerful force for social good - which is why I’m delighted to be joining an organisation at the heart of furthering the growth of a sustainable social investment market in the UK. I look forward to working with the Big Society Trust and playing my part in this important work.”
As well as his role as CEO of Business in the Community, Stephen has held a number of different executive and non-executive positions including, Chief Executive of Cookson Group plc, and Chief Executive of Novar PLC.
Stephen’s ongoing commitment to helping tackle homelessness on both a national and global scale has resulted in a non-executive directorship for Habitat for Humanity Great Britain, the charity with a mission to eliminate housing poverty.
Stephen is a member of the London Enterprise Panel and the Fair Education Alliance. He has recently been appointed Chair of Power to Change, an independent charitable trust, and is also Chairman of the National Schools Partnership.
